Trailing Succulents That Grow Beautifully in Hanging Pots

Trailing succulents are an easy way to incorporate some low maintenance hanging plants to give your space some color and texture. Here are 5 trailing succulents to give you an idea of the possibilities.

Donkey’s Tail — Sedum Morganianum

This is an easy to propagate, thick, ropey plant. It does flower with small red blooms, but this is rare. It is light blue-green in color with broad, juicy overlapping leaves. It grows to about 4 feet long and gets very heavy. This plant does well in pots, soil, outdoors, or indoors and needs medium amounts of light. If it gets too much it will become lighter in color. Donkey’s tail requires little water to give it a substantial drink every 10 days or so.

Little Pickles — Othonna Capensis

This small plant forms a crush of thick foliage. The leaves resemble little pickles. Usually a deep blue-green color, the leaves will appear purple at times. Yellow flowers appear from spring to fall. It does well in soil, pots, and only needs very little water once established. Sun is best for these plants, but it can tolerate light shade.

String of Hearts — Ceropegia woodii

This is a thin, wispy plant. Its common name is an apt description. It is also called Rosary Vine. The leaves are thin, wide, and spaced far apart. It can grow up to 4 foot long, though 2 foot is average. It needs shade and always avoid direct sunlight. It needs very little water so water it about every 5 days, except for during the hottest parts of the year when it will need more water.

String of Pearls — Curio rowleyanus

This is another aptly named plant, although a string of green grapes would be the best description. This bright green plant grows to suit its environment so you may need to trim it regularly. String of Pearls grows best in bright light but avoid direct to prevent burns. Let the pot dry completely between watering and be careful not to over water. This plant needs little water.

String of Nickels — Dischidia nummularia

This plant is a vine with leaves that flat and about the size and shape of nickels. It is usually grey-green when healthy. String of Nickels grows best in medium light. Thoroughly wet the soil with each watering but do not overwater. Allow the soil to dry completely before watering. This is a unique plant because wild specimens grow anchored in moss or to the sides of trees.

Kenya Hyacinth — Sansevieria parva

Also called the snake plant, this plant has dark green foliage with lighter green bands. It starts off as growing tall before bending over to hang. It produces white, lace-like flowers in late winter or early spring. Kenya Hyacinth needs partial shade to grow. Water thoroughly but allow to dry between waterings.

succulent

All succulents need high-quality soil with adequate drainage. Succulents are desert plants, so they do not tolerate water, mud, or overly wet conditions.
